National Onion Labs, Inc. (NOL) is excited to announce that Calandri SonRise Farms L.P. has contracted to participate in the NOL Flavor Certification Program for its 2008 West Coast sweet onion plantings. Calandri SonRise Farms joins a select group of distinguished NOL clients who are committed to providing mild and sweet onions that will help to grow the sweet onion category through consumer satisfaction.
John Calandri shared that he is very concerned about the product quality being offered to consumers. “There are many pungent onions being offered to the consumer as sweet onions and this is misleading to the consumer. By using the services of NOL, we make it easy for the consumer to buy sweet onions that are truly sweet.” Calandri admits to being a newcomer to the sweet onion category; however he believes that using NOL to document and improve the flavor quality of their onions helps them to provide a superior product.
National Onion Labs, Inc., located in Collins, GA is the acknowledged Industry leader in onion flavor analysis and flavor certification. David Burrell, president of NOL, believes flavor is the central issue facing the sweet onion category as studies around the world have documented that the consumer buys onions for their specific flavors. Product which has attained Certified Sweet® or Certified Extra Sweet® certification will provide the flavors that the sweet onion consumer is seeking.
“Last year we participated and more than half of our tested fields failed to attain Certified Sweet® or Certified Extra Sweet® status. We made the tough decision to not sell these as sweet onions. We had more than ample proof that these onions would not be what the consumer was looking for. It was a hard decision that financially hurt, but this is the kind of decision that growers and distributors must make if the sweet onion category is to grow and remain reputable.”
Calandri SonRise Farms is located in Lancaster, California where the Calandri family has been farming the Antelope Valley for the better part of the last century. John A. Calandri has been growing onions for the last 30 years but only recently began to grow sweet onions. “During this long span of farming many things have changed in the way of onion production, mostly for the better.” remarked Calandri. “Using NOL’s services allows us to continue to embrace the new. And as I am fond of saying, you can't have progress without learning from the past.”
“Remember,” commented David Burrell “There is ample proof showing that when you meet the consumer’s expectation of flavor in a sweet onion you will turn that consumer into a repeat buyer and that is our ultimate objective. We want repeat buyers that are satisfied.”
